IMPORTANT DISTINCTION

GATE is not NAPLAN

Most parents assume GATE is another school test. It’s fundamentally different.

🏫 NAPLAN

  • β†’ Tests what your child has already learned
  • β†’ Spelling, grammar, numeracy facts
  • β†’ Curriculum-based content
  • β†’ Familiar question formats
  • β†’ Done at school, low pressure

πŸ† GATE / ASET

  • β†’ Tests potential β€” how your child thinks
  • β†’ Reasoning, analysis, creative thinking
  • β†’ Unfamiliar, never-seen-before problems
  • β†’ Strict time pressure (1 min per question)
  • β†’ One-shot, high-stakes, competitive

Common questions

We recommend starting in Year 4 for the best results β€” this gives students 12 months to build skills progressively. An intensive Year 5 program also works well for motivated students. The ASET is held in March of Year 5.
Yes. The ASET tests reasoning and potential, not school knowledge. Many high-achieving students find the test harder than expected because the question formats are completely unfamiliar. Preparation builds familiarity, speed, and confidence under pressure.
Perth Modern’s minimum TSS was approximately 244 in 2026. We recommend targeting 260+ for a comfortable margin, as cutoffs fluctuate annually. Other GATE schools have lower requirements β€” some from 210 TSS β€” giving students excellent options across Perth.
Maximum 6 students per group. This ensures every student receives individualised attention, personalised feedback on writing, and the opportunity to work through challenging problems with tutor support.
Yes β€” full-length timed mock ASET exams that replicate real test conditions including timing, paper-based format, and question difficulty. Results are analysed individually and used to create targeted improvement plans.
Absolutely. We assess their current level, place them in the right group, and provide catch-up materials so they integrate seamlessly.
