NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is one of the most important standardised tests for WA students. Whether your child is in Year 3, 5, 7 or 9, a smart preparation strategy can make all the difference.
1. Start Early, Build Gradually
Research consistently shows that spaced practice — studying in shorter sessions over a longer period — is far more effective than last-minute cramming. Aim to begin preparation 8–12 weeks before the test date.
2. Focus on Weak Areas First
Use a diagnostic test to identify where your child struggles. If they find reading comprehension difficult but excel at numeracy, allocate more time to literacy. At EduLift, every student begins with a diagnostic assessment so we know exactly where to focus.
3. Practice with Timed Tests
NAPLAN is a timed assessment. Regular practice under timed conditions helps students build speed, reduce anxiety, and develop test-taking instincts. Start untimed, then progressively reduce the time allowed as the test approaches.
4. Review Mistakes — Don’t Just Move On
The most important part of practice is reviewing errors. Ask your child to explain why they chose a wrong answer. This metacognitive approach builds deeper understanding and prevents repeat mistakes.
5. Maintain Balance
Sleep, exercise and social time are not enemies of academic performance — they’re requirements for it. Students who are well-rested and emotionally balanced consistently outperform anxious, over-studied peers.
