If your child is in Year 5 or 6 and you’re considering academically selective public schools in Western Australia, you’ve probably heard of ASET — the Academic Selective Entrance Test. Here’s your complete guide.
What is ASET?
ASET is administered by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) and is used to select students for Year 7 entry into WA’s selective schools, including Perth Modern School, Shenton College Gifted and Talented Program, and others.
What Does ASET Test?
The test measures four core areas:
- Written Expression — persuasive and narrative writing
- Reading — comprehension and inference
- Mathematical Reasoning — problem-solving, not just computation
- Thinking Skills — logical and abstract reasoning
When Do Students Sit ASET?
ASET is typically held in August for students entering Year 7 the following year. Applications usually open in Term 1.
How Should My Child Prepare?
The most effective ASET preparation combines: regular timed practice tests, targeted feedback on written expression, and development of abstract reasoning skills. At EduLift, our ASET program is specifically designed around the WA syllabus and SCSA test format.
